Curwen Primary School awarded the REQM Gold Award for the Third Time!

This is the third time that Curwen Primary School is enjoying the Religious Education Quality Mark (REQM) Gold Award status. It was the first school in the London Borough of Newham to be accredited gold, and has kept this status for 10 years . Curwen are proud to continue to achieve this status again, especially given that it was attained during the lockdown.

George Casley, the assessor of the REQM, was most impressed with the pupils communication skills and know of how to assess their RE work.

It’s amazing to have RE at Curwen recognised as the subject is a major scaffold in supporting, developing and moulding our pupils to be effective citizens. Curwen's pupils are able to embrace diversity in religion and culture, and celebrate them. We believe that this helps our children become well prepared for life in Modern Britain.

RE pervades everywhere through the school, from Nursery to Year 6, and also in wider terms through collective worship, citizenship, spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSCD), 'Philosophy4Children' and cross-curricular links.

With the reopening of schools in the autumn term Curwen celebrated their gold status with each year group having a RE Day. It was a unique opportunity for children to have deep meaningful discussions about their experiences during the first lockdown and celebrate the fantastic work they have created to express their feeling and viewpoints.

A Year 2 child said, “Its ok to be different because being different makes you who you are.”

“We talked about the importance of understanding that everyone is unique and we have our own thoughts and opinions,” said a child in Year 4.

The celebration of this learning is displayed across the school’s communal areas with pupil’s work, comments and photographs.

"As RE Lead I am proud of the children and love how the children will come to share their work or tell me about the RE they are doing in class. We proactively draw on and celebrate the vast experiences and lives of pupils, parents and staff. Our children enjoy sharing what they have learnt.  We have managed to continue sharing the fantastic work with Parent and carers through having zoom assemblies for our parent to watch.  I am so proud of the hard work that the staff and children continue to show all the time. - Charlene McLeod

“I am delighted to hear that Curwen has achieved for the 3rd time in a row a REQM gold award. This shows the excellent and consistent standard that religious education holds within the school. I wholeheartedly congratulate all the staff and pupils that have made this achievement possible and feel very proud,” - Claire Clinton, Director of Religious Education and RSHE, RE Matters.
