All schools within The Tapscott Learning Trust scoop pioneering Mental Health Award

The Tapscott Learning Trust has become the first Multi Academy Trust in the country to have all of its schools complete the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools Mental Health Award and also the first MAT to have all schools achieve Gold!

All four schools within The Tapscott Learning Trust have now been recognised for their excellent and significant work in the area of Mental Health and wellbeing for staff and pupils over the past few years ensuring that the needs of their school communities continue to be met, which was particularly impressive during a pandemic.

All four primary schools, Curwen, Kensington, North Beckton and Ranelagh are based within the London Borough of Newham, an area that has been hit particularly hard during the pandemic, and have awarded a Gold award from the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools.

These prestigious awards honour outstanding provision in mental health and wellbeing support for staff, pupils, parents and the wider community.  The Department for Education recognises the direct link between positive mental health in schools and successful educational outcomes and this award builds on this link and provides a framework for educational institutions to evidence policies and initiatives that work towards improving emotional health and wellbeing for both staff and pupils. Each of the schools in the Trust have been recognised as excelling in all these areas with each taking its own approach in order to meet the needs of their unique local communities.  The schools have also ensured that this work has supported other schools both locally and nationally and Head Teacher at Kensington, Ben Levinson, works closely with the DfE on workload agenda with other staff playing active roles in the development of services.

Doctor Steve Burton, Interim Dean of Leeds Beckett’s Carnegie School of Education, said: “We are truly proud that all of the schools within The Tapscott Learning Trust have achieved the School Mental Health Award at Gold level. This is a first for a multi academy trust. The award is not just recognition of a whole-school approach to mental health, it’s a recognition of the school’s commitment to improving the life chances of children and engaging with the wider community including staff and parents/carers. We look forward to further collaboration with The Tapscott Learning Trust in this area of vital work.”

Paul Harris, CEO of the Tapscott Learning Trust said “We are delighted that all of our schools have been recognised for the amazing and vital work that they have done over a number of years in ensuring the development and embedding of excellent support in Mental Health and Wellbeing. As a group of schools it has been essential to learn from each other, developing and sharing practices to further enhance our offer to our communities. In these difficult times and as we emerge from the pandemic, it is vital that we focus on these aspects more than ever to ensure the development of all, especially for our children, giving them the tools to thrive and develop effectively in an ever-changing world.”

The Tapscott Learning Trust have since received a letter of congratulations from Baroness Berridge, at the Department of Education congratulating everyone concerned with this significant achievement.
