Dealing with Controversial Issues Course
- Tuesday 22 June 2021
Dr Jo Sell and Claire Clinton will lead this day for Newham schools to support you thinking through how we handle controversial issues in our classrooms.
Price outside the partnership - £200 per attendee
From 9:15am - 4:15pm at Ranelagh Primary School or via Zoom accordingly
REALationships education is run by Dr Jo Sell who is the relationships, sex and health education (RSHE) advisor for Newham and an Honorary Research Associate at UCL, Institute of Education. Jo is an experienced classroom teacher, governor and teacher trainer, and researcher, having been specialising for over 25 years in what is now called ‘relationships, sex and health education’ (RSHE). Jo’s mantra for RSHE is that ‘RSHE is not just for now, to gain qualifications, or develop a career, but is education for a lifetime’.
She completed her PhD in 2019 with a thesis entitled ‘Faith, Relationships and Sex Education: Giving voice to young people of different faiths and none in regard to relationships and sex education’. Using only student voices, she explored young people’s expectations for good quality RSHE. The thesis also investigated what, according to pupils, the characteristics of faith-sensitive RSHE might be and if it was an appropriate approach for the delivery of RSHE in the classroom. In January 2021 Jo’s academic paper ‘Faith-sensitive RSE in areas of low religious observance: Really?’ was published in Sex Education: Sexuality, Society and Learning Journal.
Much of the training available is explained on the main RSHE section on the website and is free of charge to RSHE Partnership schools. If schools wish for bespoke teacher/governor training, or advice, this may come at extra cost.
